The same epoxy system that lasts fifteen years in a Denver storage garage can peel in three in a Phoenix daily-driver garage, and the difference is not the installer. Climate sets tire temperature, slab moisture, and the installation season. Slab construction, which varies by region and era, sets how much preparation is needed. Garage size, which also varies by region, sets the square footage every quote is built on.
Our analysis of the federal government's 2024 household energy survey finds 42.9% of occupied U.S. homes have an attached garage, but the share ranges from 31.2% in the Northeast to 49.9% in the West. Those are installed-stock figures, not a count of projects, but they frame where the work is.
State by state: homes with an attached garage; homes built on a concrete slab; households with an electric vehicle
Homes with an attached garage: 42.9% nationally. Highest in Idaho (60.4%), Utah (59.9%), Nevada (57.7%); lowest in District of Columbia (5.1%), New York (23.2%), Massachusetts (25.9%).
Homes built on a concrete slab: 32.4% nationally. Highest in Arizona (63.8%), New Mexico (58.6%), Florida (57.7%); lowest in Rhode Island (9.1%), Vermont (11%), Massachusetts (11.1%).
Households with an electric vehicle: 4.5% nationally. Highest in California (12.5%), Hawaii (9.3%), Colorado (8.9%); lowest in Tennessee (3.1%), Texas (3.3%), Illinois (3.4%).
Garage Floor Brief calculated these state estimates from the Energy Information Administration's 2024 household survey microdata. EIA publishes the 2024 survey nationally and by region, not by state. Shares are weighted; a dash means the state sample was too small for a reliable estimate (fewer than 100 households, fewer than 10 yes answers, or a relative standard error above 30%). Source data.
